ArcelorMittal has increased the safety zone around a dam of an iron ore mine of the steel group in Brazil. As a result, a total of around 30 families have to be relocated elsewhere.

At the beginning of February a community of 200 people was evacuated around a dam at the Serra Azul mine in the state of Minas Gerais. The situation was then closely monitored, including with video cameras, radar equipment, seismic monitoring systems and drones. For safety reasons, the area that will be hit should the dam collapse has now been enlarged.

In January another dam collapsed at an iron ore mine of the Brazilian mining company Vale (not related to ArcelorMittal). A huge stream of mud and garbage buried parts of the site and neighboring residential complexes near Brumadinho, also in the state of Minas Gerais. Many people died. The Brazilian authorities now supervise mining more closely.
