Crane operator at Arcelor Italy crashed into the sea

1 min read

A crane operator from the ArcelorMittal steel plant in the southern Italian city of Taranto went missing after a crane was collapsed into the sea. Search actions of divers from the fire brigade have so far been in vain.

The accident, which took place on Wednesday, was caused by heavy gusts of wind in the port of Taranto. ArcelorMittal, listed on the Amsterdam stock exchange, announced via Twitter that the fire brigade stopped searching at 11 p.m. in order to resume the rescue as soon as possible.

USB trade union reacts critically to the accident with the eighty meter high crane. In 2012, for example, happened at almost exactly the same place in a fatal crane accident. According to the union, no good safety measures have since been taken to prevent a recurrence.
