Elton John had autocue installed on Diana funeral

1 min read

Elton John was so nervous when he had to perform at the funeral of Princess Diana that he had an autocue installed with the lyrics of the song Candle in the wind. The 72-year-old singer told this during an interview at the Royal Academy of Music, where he once studied.

Elton sang at the funeral at Westminster Abbey after Diana died in a car accident in Paris. The meeting was broadcast live and watched by hundreds of millions of people around the world.

Candle in the wind was an old hit by Elton John. He only replaced the first lines, “Goodbye Norma Jean,” for “Goodbye England’s Rose.” The new version was in first place in the charts for weeks and became the fastest selling single in the UK ever.

“It was the first time I had an autocue installed,” the singer admitted during the interview at the Academy. “Because I thought: if I now sing ‘Goodbye Norma Jean’, I will be hung, drowned and quartered. It was just a precaution.”
