According to American media, the company pays around half a billion dollars to add the animation series to the offer of new HBO Max streaming service. This solely concerns the broadcasting rights for North America. They run a lot in the papers because South Park has been running for a long time. The 23rd season of the animation show is currently being broadcast. According to Variety, HBO has acquired the rights to all episodes so far, plus those for the next three seasons. Streaming platforms have started hunting for popular hit shows from the past in recent months. Last month Netflix managed to get hold of Seinfeld’s, after HBO Max won the rights of Friends in the summer. After the launch of NBC Universal’s streaming service Peacock in 2021, the The Office series can be seen exclusively there. It is not clear at this moment whether all new streaming services also come to the Netherlands, and what that means for local broadcasting rights.
