It’s official: Gossip Girl returns in 2019

There will be a spin-off from the immensely popular Gossip Girl series! The new show will be shown at the HBO Max streaming service, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“It’s something we’ve talked about,” showrunner Joshua Safran told The Hollywood Reporter. “We are all so in love with the original and have had such a wonderful time, it has been such a big part of our lives … it seemed like the best time and the best way to do it.”

The spin-off takes place eight years after the last episode of Gossip Girl, and follows a new group of wealthy New York teenagers. The prestige series examines how much social media – and the landscape of New York itself – has changed in the intervening years. The latest episode, for example, already dates from 2012.

“It’s just a new look at this specific New York society, with the idea that society is constantly changing,” said Joshua Safran. “So how has this world changed, how has social media and its effect changed? All these things enable us to look at the world twelve years later instead of just repeating the story. None of us is interested in redoing a story. “

Unfortunately, beloved characters such as Serena and Blair will not return, but the spin-off promises to be just as scandalous as its predecessor. Whether or not guest roles are also reserved for the famous actors in the new version is not yet known.

HBO Max, where the series will be shown, is the new streaming service from WarnerMedia. The brand-new streaming service is reported to be launched in America in 2020. It is not yet known whether he will also come to the Netherlands. It became clear earlier that Friends and Pretty Little Liars, among others, are moving to HBO Max.

For now, all six seasons of Gossip Girl can still be seen at Netflix.
