Almost 27 years after his death, the actor tells about the disastrous consequences in the 60 Minutes program. “River was a very good actor and huge movie star” River Phoenix was a very famous name in the 80s and 90s. At the age of 23, the actor died of an overdose in 1993 just outside of The Viper Room nightclub in Hollywood. Brother Joaquin, then 19 years old, was in the same tent that evening. According to the Joker actor, the way the American media dealt with the death of his brother “was a hindrance to the grieving process,” he told the 60 Minutes program. “As a family, we were so far removed from the entertainment world. We didn’t watch programs like that,” said Joaquin. “We didn’t have any showbiz newspapers. River was a very good actor and huge movie star and we actually didn’t notice it at all (…) You are at your most vulnerable at that time and helicopters fly over your house, people who trying to penetrate your house. That was not good for our grieving process. ” River still has an important role in Joaquin’s life. “I think that in almost every film I make there is a connection with River,” says the Her actor. “I think we all continue to feel his presence and direction in our lives.” Joaquin also explained how River had been a major influence for him to act. River became famous for roles in Stand By Me, My Own Private Idaho and Running on Empty, among others.
