Joker also the biggest contender at the BAFTAs

The crime drama Joker is the biggest contender during the upcoming presentation of the BAFTAs, the most important British film prizes. The film about the history of the world’s most famous comic strip villain leads the dance with eleven nominations, including that for the most important category of best film.

After Joker, The Irishman and Once Upon a Time follow in Hollywood with ten nominations each and 1917 with nine chances. The three films are also nominated for best film. The South Korean Parasite, which won a Golden Globe on Sunday for best non-English-language film, is the fifth and last nominee in this category. The directors of these five films also decide together who can collect the prize for best director.

In the actor categories it is the women between Jessie Buckley (Wild Rose), Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story), Saoirse Ronan (Little Woman), Charlize Theron (Bombshell) and Renée Zellweger (Judy). Best actor nominated include Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Adam Driver (Marriage Story), Taron Egerton (Rocket Man), Joaquin Phoenix (Joker) and Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes).

Strikingly enough, Margot Robbie takes on herself in the best supporting actor. She has been nominated for both her role in Bombshell and in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Scarlett Johansson also has a chance in this category, this time for Jojo Rabbit.

The BAFTAs will be awarded on 2 February in the Royal Albert Hall in London. That is a week earlier than the Oscars ceremony. The awarding of the BAFTAs is one of the most important indicators for those who go home with an Oscar each year.
