Life Joker receives eleven Oscar nominations By weekster Posted on 1 week ago 3 min read Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google+ The dark comic film Joker is the big winner in handing out the nominations for the Oscars, the most important film prizes in the world. Joker received eleven nominations and has a chance to win in the important categories of best film, lead actor (Joaquin Phoenix) and director (Todd Philips). Several films received ten nominations, such as the 1917 war epic by Sam Mendes, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood by Quentin Tarantino and Netflix film The Irishman by Martin Scorsese. They are all nominated for best film and best direction. It is striking that the rest of the nominations for 1917 are mainly for technical categories, such as camera work. Cameraman Roger Deakins shot the film in minute-long shots. Streaming service Netflix has received more than twenty nominations with its three films The Irishman, Marriage Story and The two popes. This is not a guarantee that Netflix will actually receive a lot of prizes. Netflix had 34 nominations at the Golden Globes, of which only two were cashed. Joaquin Phoenix has to compete in the best male leading role category against Leonardo DiCaprio (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Adam Driver (Marriage Story), Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory) and Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes). In the best female lead role, the battle goes between Renee Zellweger (Judy), Scarlett Johansson (Marriage Story), Saoirse Ronan (Little Woman), Charlize Theron (Bombshell) and Cynthia Erivo (Harriet). The Dutch makeup artist Arjen Tuiten has a chance to win a sculpture for his work on the fantasy film Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. Two years ago he was already nominated for his work on the drama Wonder, about a deformed boy. Other potential Dutch contenders, such as costume designers Jany Temime or composer Tom Holkenborg, received no nominations. The Dutch entry for best foreign film, Instinct by Halina Reijn, already dropped out in the preliminaries.
