The streaming platform is said to have discriminated against when it offered the Oscar winner a considerably lower amount for a comedy special than its peers. “With the offer, Netflix maintains the extreme pay gap between black women and both men in general and the white population” According to the court papers, which are owned by CNN, Netflix Mo’Nique made an offer of half a million dollars for a one-hour comedy show. For similar specials from other comedians, including Jerry Seinfeld, Amy Schumer and Chris Rock, the streaming service was willing to pay millions. “The conditions of the Netflix proposal were based on its gender and race, and therefore discriminatory,” the Mo’Nique lawyer claims in the indictment. “With the offer, Netflix maintains the extreme pay gap between black women and both men in general and the white population.” Netflix has indicated that it still supports Mo’Nique’s offer and challenges the discrimination case.
