Netflix scrapes suicide scene from ’13 Reasons Why’ series

Netflix has scrapped a suicide scene from the first season of the popular teen series 13 Reasons Why. The reason is the persistent criticism that the series, which revolves around a girl who ended her life, would have caused more suicides.

“While we are preparing for the start of the third season, we are aware of the ongoing debate around the series. On the advice of medical experts, including the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, we decided in consultation with creator Brian Yorkey and the producers to adjust the scene in which Hannah puts an end to her life, “says a statement from streaming service Netflix.

This is a three-minute scene from the last episode of the first season. The series, based on the book of the same name, tells the story of Hannah who decides to end her life after years of harassment. Her classmates react shocked and some struggle with guilt because of participating in the harassment.

13 Reasons Why became a big hit after its launch in 2017, especially among young people. The series, in which singer Selena Gomez also collaborated as an executive producer, also received rave reviews. Because of the criticism of the violent scenes, Netflix added a warning before the series was played.

In April the news came out that young Americans would have committed suicide more often since the launch of 13 Reasons Why. According to American scientific research, the number of suicides among young people between the ages of 10 and 17 in April 2017 has risen by nearly 30 percent
