Queer Eye star Jonathan Van Ness (32) is candid in an interview in the New York Times about his HIV infection. He was diagnosed at the age of 25 after he fainted and had flu-like symptoms.

“It’s hard for me to be as open as I want to be”

“That day was just as devastating as you would think it would be,” says Jonathan in a chapter of his book Over The Top, which will be released Tuesday, September 24.

Jonathan considers himself a proud “member of the wonderful HIV-positive community” and hopes that his transparency on the subject helps to prevent misconceptions. “When Queer Eye came out, it was very difficult because I thought,” Do I want to talk about my status? ” I do need to talk about this. ”

Jonathan does not find it easy to be so open. “I have had nightmares every night for the past three months because I am afraid of being so vulnerable to people,” he admits. “It’s hard for me to be as open as I want to be.”

Later in the interview, the hair stylist talks about his struggle with addiction. He reveals that he started using cocaine during his first semester at the university and later also started smoking methamphetamine. The Queer Eye star was twice admitted to a rehab clinic.
