Record for women directors in Hollywood

The number of women behind the camera in Hollywood productions rose to a record high in 2019. 12 well-scoring films were directed by women, including Frozen II, Captain Marvel and Hustlers.

“The question is whether 2019 will stand on its own”
Women were involved in just over 10% of the top films of the past year; twice as much as a year earlier and the highest percentage of the past decade. This is according to a study by the University of Southern California.

According to another study from the University of San Diego, 20% of all directors, writers, producers, editors and cinematographers are women. “For the first time in 13 years we see a change in the hiring policy of female directors,” says one of the researchers.

Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” and Olivia Wilde’s “Booksmart” also contributed to the good grades.

With the rise of the # MeToo and the Time’s Up movements, diversity has become a hot topic in Hollywood. Yet only one woman has won an Oscar for Best Director. That was Kathryn Bigelow who directed The Hurt Locker in 2010.

No female director has been nominated for the Golden Globes Awards to be awarded on Sunday. According to the researchers, much work still needs to be done. “The question is whether 2019 will stand on its own, or whether it is the beginning of a new trend.”
