The well-known round sunglasses with the green glasses by Beatle John Lennon delivered much more than expected at an auction in London on Friday. “The most iconic sunglasses in the history of rock and roll”, as Sotheby’s auction house called it gem, changed ownership for 165,000 euros, while the estimated value was 9500 euros.

The glasses have been in the hands of Alan Herring for 50 years, who was a driver for the band members in the 1960s. John Lennon gave him his glasses that were broken. “When I asked if I should have it made, John said the glasses were only meant for looks.”

Other Beatle memorabilia were also auctioned, such as clothing and a Lennon toaster. A beaded necklace by George Harrison with bells attached to it, also yielded much more than estimated at just under 12,000 euros.
