Life The trial of Harvey Weinstein with firm requests to begin Posted on January 24, 2020 2 min read Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google+ The substantive trial of the fallen American film producer Harvey Weinstein (67) has started in New York. The judge opened the session after which the prosecutors and defenders were allowed to hold their opening arguments. “The man sitting there was not only powerful in Hollywood, he was also a rapist” The trial against the 67-year-old revolves around five charges. One woman accuses the producer of rape in 2013, another woman claims that he sexually abused her in 2006. The prosecutors called him on Wednesday before the jury, among other things, “a sexual predator and a rapist”. According to them, he abused his position. “The man sitting there was not only powerful in Hollywood, he was also a rapist,” said lawyer Meghan Hast on behalf of two victims, production assistant Mimi Haleyi and actress Jessica Mann. Harvey Weinstein’s lawyer refuted these allegations and strongly denies that the film magnate is a “predator,” as the prosecutors claim. “You will see evidence from the witnesses that the allegations are not true and that he was not a master manipulator,” said lawyer Damon Cheronis. He also showed a few text messages that the women sent to Weinstein. According to Cheronis, these point to sexual relationships with mutual consent. Harvey Weinstein is accused of sexual abuse by more than eighty women. This comes to light for the first time in October 2017. Several women told their stories in The New York Times, after which more and more stories about victims came out. This eventually led to the international # MeToo movement.
