The president of Warner Bros., Toby Emmerich, announced on Tuesday that a new Matrix film is coming. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will be seen in the fourth part as Neo and Trinity respectively.

The fourth Matrix film is directed and written by Lana Wachowski. Together with her sister Lilly, she also wrote the other three parts.

“We are very happy to be able to make another Matrix movie with Lana,” Emmerich told Variety. “Lana is an exceptionally creative filmmaker.” Aleksandar Hemon and David Mitchell will also contribute to the script.

The production of the film will start in 2020. No details have yet been disclosed about the plot of the new film. The name is also not yet known.

The Matrix trilogy worldwide success

The first Matrix film was released twenty years ago and became a worldwide blockbuster. The film won four Oscars, including one for the groundbreaking visual effects.

In 2003 The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions were released. The three parts together yielded more than 1.6 billion dollars (more than 1.4 billion euros). They were somewhat on a shitty side but people has bought them for name only.

The science fiction film series is about rebels who fight against an all-controlling, self-thinking computer system. “Many film ideas that we discussed twenty years ago have turned out to be even more relevant in today’s society,” said Wachowski. “I am very happy to work with the characters of Neo and Trinity again.”
