Online shopping now more difficult for Swiss customers

1 min read

New VAT rules brought in this year means buying goods online is now far more complicated – if possible at all.

The change is designed to protect Swiss based online retailers. Previously all goods ordered over the internet from Switzerland charged VAT – but from outside the country, retailers such as Amazon, waived the fee if it was less than CHF 5.

Its not necessarily the cost that’s the problem – but the complexity. Amazon.com will no longer ship to Switzerland at all, meaning customers will have to use the French, German or UK sites. But even then, many may choose not to sell to Swiss customers to avoid the paperwork.

So, if you find it harder to get international firms to deliver – blame the Swiss government.
