The importance that the Dutch State took in Air France KLM’s aviation combination does not go against European rules. According to the European Commissioner for Competition Margrethe Vestager, the transaction was made under conditions that also apply to private investors. According to Vestager, governments are free to make investments at market conditions. “The most important thing is that you behave like a market party”, according to the European Commissioner. She said that Brussels is always afraid if governments use taxpayers’ money, which is logically not possible for private parties. The Netherlands recently announced a 14 per cent interest in Air France KLM. With this, the government wants to be assured that the Dutch interests such as KLM and Schiphol are better protected.
