The American cable and telecommunications company Liberty Global is buying the Swiss telecommunications company Sunrise Communications. The takeover bid gives Sunrise a value of approximately EUR 4.6 billion. Liberty says that the acquisition will strengthen its activities in areas such as fiber optic, cable and mobile services. The Board of Sunrise supports the deal, as does major shareholder Freenet, who holds about a quarter of Sunrise. Sunrise was planning to take over the Swiss cable company UPC Switzerland from Liberty Global last year. That transaction was called into question when Freenet opposed the takeover. The Investor found the purchase price too high.
