Many ski resorts in the Alps will close in the coming days or are already closed. But this weekend there is still plenty of fresh snow. Winter seems to need more time to get going.

On Friday, fresh snow fell in large parts of the Swiss Alps. Later that day, snow also began to fall in the Italian Alps and the western part of Austria. Up to 15 centimeters of snow fell there locally.

“It’s a White Easter instead of a white Christmas. This has given the ski season a nice tail.”

The contrast with the start of the season is great. In December, winter sports enthusiasts in many ski resorts were faced with high temperatures and green meadows, with a narrow strip of snow here and there. “That was extra sour, because many people wanted to go on a winter sports holiday ‘carefree’ for the first time after corona. We had a lot of questions about snow safety. That will only increase in the future in view of climate change,” expects the weather service.

Alpine peaks with the most snow at the moment

  • France, Tignes: 420 centimeters
  • Switzerland, Saas-Fee: 338 centimeters
  • Austria, St. Anton am Arlberg: 220 centimetres

That winter “takes a little longer to get going”. “There seems to be a pattern that you should not go skiing around Christmas but rather later in the season, for example in February. Then it’s a little colder.”

You also saw that in the last season of Alpine skiing. In October and November, nine games had to be cancelled or rescheduled due to weather. In the last weekend of January, the downhill and giant slalom could not continue in southern German Garmisch-Partenkirchen due to a lack of snow.
