Dutch police busted a ring of banking fraudsters

1 min read

The police have arrested six suspects who are associated with fraud via Whatsapp. The criminals sent payment requests of 1 eurocent, which led victims to a phishing site.

The suspects are from Bussum, Nederhorst den Berg, Hilversum, Huizen and Hengelo. They are between fifteen and nineteen years old. They are suspected of computer breach, scams, threats and extortion

The criminals place advertisements on sales sites such as Marktplaats. As soon as a salesperson reports through the site, the criminals want to continue the conversation via Whatsapp. The seller then says that he is often scammed and wants a payment of 1 cent to verify that the buyer says who he is.

The link that is sent leads to a page that looks like a bank’s site, but is actually a phishing site that snatches the victim’s data. The criminals can then go to the victim’s bank account and do whatever he want, in general.
