Life Queen Elizabeth barely recognizable in new season The Crown Posted on September 12, 2019 3 min read Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google+ The third season of Netflix hit The Crown is coming and fans can’t wait to see how the new cast is going. But there are some hooks and eyes on it. Because how do they make the transition from Claire Foy (35) as Queen Elizabeth to an older Olivia Coleman (45) as the British queen? The Crown is almost making its comeback, but with a brand new cast. Olivia Coleman takes over from Claire Foy as Queen Elizabeth, but that also brings some challenges. The 45-year-old actress has a different eye color than her 35-year-old colleague and the British monarch. Olivia’s eyes are dark brown, but Claire and Elizabeth’s are bright blue. Director Ben Caron tells the British newspaper The Guardian how they have solved this. First of all they tried that with color lenses, but this made it seem like Olivia “acted with a mask on.” So it had to be different. “It seemed like those lenses took all their acting talents away and put them away in a safe,” Ben explains. And of course that is not the intention, certainly not with an Oscar winner. Special effects also could not cause her eye color to change. “It didn’t feel right”, Ben continues. It has not been allowed to help and that is why Her Majesty will have brown eyes in the third season. Olivia is not the only newcomer in the Netflix series, Tobias Menzies and Helena Bonham Carter will also be seated at the royal dining table. In addition, it has recently been announced that Gillian Anderson will play the controversial Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.
