The creator of Ugly Betty was found dead in a hotel room in Miami, Variety reports. Silvio Horto created the American version of the show, which was based on a Colombian telenovela. He was also the showrunner of Ugly Betty, of which eighty episodes were made between 2006 and 2010. In 2007 he won an Emmy for Ugly Betty. Leading actor America Ferrera then also won the prize for her acting in the series.
