Alain Berset succeeds Ignazio Cassis as president of Switzerland. The 50-year-old Berset was already vice president this year and was elected by parliament on Wednesday.

The president of the Swiss Confederation or federal president is in Switzerland the representative of the Federal Council, the Federal Government of the country, for a term of office of one year, which runs each time from 1 January to 31 December. As a rule, the federal president is the person who was vice president of the previous year.

Berset was president in 2018 when he received 190 of the 210 valid votes. This time, 140 of the 181 valid votes in the Bundesrat went to Berset. In recent years, he was minister of Health and led the country through the corona pandemic.
