Ruben Wagensberg, 37, a member of the Catalan independence movement affiliated to the left-wing Catalan group ERC, is in hiding in Switzerland. Fearing he could be convicted as a ‘terrorist leader’, Worgensberg told Catalan radio, particularly RAC1, that he is on the run from Spanish judicial authorities who claim to have evidence proving his role as a terrorist leader. If proven, he could face up to 15 years in prison.

Wagensberg, who has not been seen since the Christmas holidays, said he did not want to return to Catalonia because of fear and panic and expressed concern about the rule of law being respected in his case. He emphasized that he must be protected from what he described as attacks on the Spanish legal system.

After three and a half years of investigation, the Spanish Prosecutor’s Office believes there is enough evidence to identify Wagensberg as the leader of a week of violent protests in Catalonia in October 2019. These protests, which resulted in the blockade of Barcelona airport and the cancellation of numerous flights, were initially thought to be spontaneous. Wagensberg, who operates under the pseudonym Konan on Telegram, is alleged to have led the protests.

Violent demonstrations continued every day, with protests and chaos in the streets, including railroad blockades in Girona. They were triggered by the 13-year prison sentences handed down in 2017 to nine Catalan political leaders who organized an independence referendum against a Madrid government ban.

Wagensberg, appearing on stage for the first time in weeks, complained of prolonged absences and severe anxiety attacks due to the ongoing investigations. He condemned the pressure from the judicial authorities and said the investigations were a form of state repression.

It is worth noting that Wagensberg is not alone in Switzerland; he is accompanied by his party colleague Marta Rovira, who fled to Switzerland in 2017 for her involvement in the organization of the independence referendum. Both are currently represented by the same legal team and are accused of directing the October 2019 action that Rovira carried out remotely from Switzerland.

The demonstration is seen as the greatest to opposition to Mileis’s plans for austerity and privatizations since he came to power last month. Upon his appointment, Milei promised to restore the country’s poor economic state. Annual inflation in the country has risen to 200 percent and more than 40 percent of the country’s population lives below the poverty line.

Milei wants to reduce government intervention and make substantial cuts. For example, he also wants to make privatization of state-owned enterprises possible. Milei also wants to implement all kinds of labor reforms. For example, he wants to limit the right to strike and broaden the legal probationary period from three to eight months. Milei also wants employees to receive less severance pay.

Milei’s plans were heavily criticized by union CGT. CBT went to court, which then ruled that parts of the plan were “repressive or punitive in nature” and that it was not clear how the plans of the new government would help create jobs.

The judge decided that the plans went on hold until the parliament has ruled. The government can still appeal this decision. The trade unions’ association was pleased with the decision of the judge, but continued today’s big strike.

The Milei government continues to hold on to the reforms it has planned. “There is no strike that stops us, there is no threat that intimidates us,” Milei’s Minister of Security and former rival in Patricia Bullrich presidential election told X. “They are mafia union members, poverty managers, accomplicity judges and corrupt politicians, all of whom defend their privileges and oppose the change that society has democratically chosen for.”

Milei eventually won a majority of 56 percent of voters behind him after an exciting election campaign in the second round. Despite his victory in the presidential election, Milei’s party, La Libertad Avanza, has no majority in the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The Swiss parliament advanced a proposal on Wednesday aimed at prohibiting the use of racist symbols that endorse violent or extremist behavior. This includes speeches, gestures, displaying flags that promote hatred, and wearing symbols reminiscent of Nazi tyranny in Europe. The proposal, voted on with a 23-16 majority and three abstentions, seeks to criminalize the public display of such symbols and gestures. The legislation’s specifics are yet to be determined. The next step involves consideration by the House of Commons, the National Council.

If enacted, Switzerland would align with several European neighbors that have implemented similar bans on incitement to hatred. The initiative comes amid a rise in anti-Semitism in Europe, following Israel’s military response in Gaza after a deadly Hamas attack on October 7.

Federal council member Elisabeth Baume-Schneider, heading the federal justice and police department, emphasized the need to exclude symbols justifying violence from society. She acknowledged the challenge of a complete ban due to the potential cultural and educational context of such symbols. The legislators agreed that Swiss judges should maintain a degree of oversight in assessing cases related to these symbols. A prior proposal focusing solely on banning Nazi symbols was rejected earlier this year.

The U.S. House of Representatives has authorized an inquiry into the removal of President Joe Biden over allegations of exploiting business dealings with his son Hunter Biden. The proposal garnered approval with 221 votes in favor and 212 against, reflecting the Republican majority in the House.

Initiated in September by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, the investigation received formal endorsement through Wednesday’s vote. President Biden and the White House assert that the probe is baseless and politically driven, with Biden stating in a released statement,

“Instead of focusing on improving the lives of Americans, Republicans are attempting to undermine me with falsehoods.”

The likelihood of Biden facing impeachment appears slim for several reasons. Firstly, Republicans have not presented compelling evidence supporting their claims of Biden’s involvement in corruption, a denial echoed by both Biden and his son.

Hunter Biden stated, “There is no evidence that my father was financially involved in my company because it didn’t happen.”

Furthermore, the Republican party lacks a Senate majority, holding only 49 seats compared to the Democrats’ 51. Additionally, a two-thirds majority in the Senate is required for an impeachment to proceed. Despite the low probability of impeachment, the proceedings could impact Biden’s upcoming election campaign, providing Republicans with an opportunity to accuse him of corruption in the coming year.

In the upcoming month, the new peace plan put forth by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is slated for discussion, with the deliberations set to take place in Davos, Switzerland, on the eve of the commencement of the World Economic Forum.

Zelensky conveyed his optimism about the initiative, stating, “Switzerland supports this initiative, as does any project capable of forming the basis for a negotiation process aimed at achieving lasting peace,” in a statement on X. Whether President Zelensky himself will be present in Switzerland remains uncertain.

The Ukrainian government intends to present its comprehensive peace plan during the meeting. The plan encompasses the withdrawal of all Russian forces from the occupied territories, including Crimea, along with the provision of certain security guarantees. Ukraine emphasizes the need for accountability for Russian politicians and military representatives involved in the conflict.

As outlined by the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs, security advisers from various nations will participate in the discussions. Similar consultations have occurred previously, with the most recent one taking place in Malta in October. Notably, Russia, which rejects Ukraine’s peace plan, has not been included in previous meetings.

Swiss authorities have accused Trafigura, a raw material trader, of engaging in bribery in Angola. Alongside this, a high-ranking director of the company is facing prosecution for authorizing the payment of bribes. Simultaneously, the U.S. justice system is investigating the company for alleged corruption in Brazil.

According to Swiss prosecutors, the registered parent company of Trafigura in the Netherlands transferred 4.3 million euros from a Geneva bank account to a senior executive of the Angolan state oil company, Sonangol. The Swiss consider this individual as an Angolan government official. Additionally, the executive received $604,000 in cash, and Trafigura covered his nearly 800-euro hotel stay. These transactions occurred between 2009 and 2011.

Justice authorities assert that these payments allowed Trafigura to secure lucrative contracts for the storage and shipping of oil for Sonangol, resulting in an estimated profit of $143.7 million. Former operational chief executive Mike Wainwright is accused of approving these bribes, a claim he denies according to Trafigura. An intermediary, who had previously worked for the company, is alleged to have cooperated in the bribery scheme.

In response to the Swiss allegations, Trafigura revealed an ongoing U.S. investigation into bribery in Brazil. The company has allocated $127 million for this purpose. The U.S. has a law against corruption abroad that enables the prosecution of non-U.S. companies. Earlier suspicions in Brazil involved Trafigura allegedly bribing employees of the state oil company Petrobras to secure favorable contracts. This was part of a broader corruption investigation known as Operation Lava Jato (Car Wash).

Jeremy Weir, the CEO of Trafigura, expressed regret for these incidents that violated their code of conduct and values. He mentioned significant improvements in rules and controls, including mandatory staff training. In 2019, the company decided to cease working with intermediaries when securing new contracts.

The ‘temporary border controls’, which started in early October, would stop on Thursday evening.

Since border controls were established, nearly 400,000 people have been checked, according to the Czech Interior Ministry. Of these, 1,167 tried to cross the border illegally. It is mainly about people from the Middle East and Afghanistan. There were also 56 suspected human traffickers arrested.

Slovakia is on a migration route. People mainly try to travel through Serbia and Hungary to Germany and other Western European countries. They do this through Slovakia, which, like the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary and Poland, among others, is part of the Schengen area.

Residents of the Schengen countries are free to travel within the area. That is why people are only controlled at the external borders. But Schengen countries may introduce temporary checks if, for example, there is a serious threat to public order or public security.

After the Czech Republic, Poland and Austria also started checks on the border with Slovakia at the beginning of October. Slovakia itself has extended checks on the border with Hungary in the past week.

Germany also established checks on the borders with neighboring countries from the Schengen area in October. Last week, our eastern neighbours extended the controls on the borders with Poland, the Czech Republic and Switzerland by twenty days.

Switzerland has made a historic stride by appointing its first female ambassador to the Holy See. This noteworthy achievement belongs to the accomplished diplomat Manuela Leimgruber, a distinguished alumna of the College of Europe in Bruges. In a momentous occasion this week, she presented her credentials to Pope Francis, symbolizing a groundbreaking moment for both Switzerland and the Holy See.

At 52 years old, Manuela Leimgruber brings a wealth of diplomatic experience to this significant role. Married and a mother, she has successfully navigated various diplomatic assignments, demonstrating her commitment to fostering international relations. Notably, Leimgruber served as an ambassador in Kenya in recent years, showcasing her diplomatic prowess and dedication to global cooperation.

Her diplomatic journey began as a diplomatic associate at the Swiss Embassy in Tel Aviv, Israel, marking the commencement of a distinguished career in international affairs. From 2006 to 2010, she held the position of head of the political and legal affairs section at the Swiss Embassy in Italy, stationed in the historic city of Rome.

Switzerland, historically influenced by the Reformation and figures like John Calvin, reestablished diplomatic ties with the Holy See a century ago. However, it is only since April 2023 that the country has reinstated an embassy in the Holy See. Manuela Leimgruber’s appointment not only reflects Switzerland’s commitment to gender equality but also underscores the nation’s dedication to maintaining fruitful diplomatic relations with the Vatican. As she takes on this pivotal role, Leimgruber is poised to contribute to the ongoing dialogue and collaboration between Switzerland and the Holy See in the years to come.

When one considers the production of computer chips, companies like Intel or TSMC often come to mind. However, in casual conversations, when people inquire about the manufacturing process, it’s common to hear ASML referred to as ‘that Dutch company’ or something similar. ASML has become synonymous with chip production and holds a nearly household-name status. The company, based in Veldhoven, plays a crucial role in the creation of chips found in computers, laptops, phones, and televisions. Such is its impact that political considerations come into play regarding the distribution of ASML equipment.

This near-monopolistic situation may be on the verge of change, as an old competitor of ASML is making a comeback. Canon, known for its cameras, has never completely disappeared from the scene. In 2020, Medium reported that out of 413 lithography machines sold, ASML accounted for 62 percent (258 units), while Canon and Nikon delivered the rest, with Canon supplying 122 units and Nikon 33. The key lies in the type of machines these three lithography manufacturers provide.

ASML is renowned for its EUV machines, designed for the most modern chips. However, a chip consists of numerous layers, and not all of them require the precision of these expensive machines. Less critical layers can be produced with older lithography machines, offering lower resolution and cost.

This is precisely where Canon comes in. The company produces two types of lithography machines: i-line steppers and KrF machines. KrF machines, named for their use of krypton fluoride lasers, are suitable for chips up to about the 90nm node. While not as cutting-edge as the sub-10nm chips often discussed, they are well-suited for non-critical layers, offering a cost-effective solution. I-line machines, on the other hand, handle even larger features, such as the thicker metal layers on a chip. Additionally, Canon’s machines contribute to the production of CMOS sensors and other chips requiring a more cost-effective approach.

Despite Canon’s presence, ASML remains the dominant force in leading-edge chip production, particularly in EUV technology. Neither Canon nor Nikon manufacture EUV machines, and Nikon produces only a handful of ArF(i) machines, with Canon exiting this market entirely. To provide a price perspective, simple steppers cost around 5 million euros, while EUV machines sell for 150 million to 200 million euros. Nevertheless, Canon is reportedly gearing up to re-enter the highly lucrative highest segment, potentially introducing a welcome wave of competition. Canon’s approach would differ from ASML’s EUV technology, instead using “stamps” to create patterns on wafers.

The German government is aiming to implement more stringent deportation measures for asylum seekers, with the ruling coalition parties of SPD, Greens, and FDP reaching an agreement on a proposed bill.

The draft legislation, spearheaded by Interior Minister Nancy Faeser of the SPD, encompasses various provisions, including an extension of the permissible detention period for asylum seekers awaiting deportation, from the current 10 days to 28 days. This extension is designed to prevent individuals from evading the deportation process.

Additionally, the proposed law grants expanded powers to the police in deportation proceedings. For instance, law enforcement personnel in asylum seekers’ centers will be authorized to conduct searches in the quarters of fellow residents who are slated for deportation. The bill also outlines tougher measures against human traffickers. It should be noted that the bill is yet to receive approval from the Bundestag.

The proposal has faced criticism from within the SPD and the Greens, as well as from church and civil society organizations, citing concerns that it encroaches upon the fundamental rights of individuals. Meanwhile, the opposition party CDU/CSU believes that the measures do not go far enough.

As of September, Germany was home to 255,000 asylum seekers, with 205,000 holding a “tolerated” status, which restricts them from leaving the country. During the first nine months of the year, approximately 12,000 people were deported. Many countries refuse to accept repatriated asylum seekers, leading them to remain in Germany. The government has been engaged in lengthy negotiations with these countries to establish agreements regarding their return.

This proposed bill forms part of a broader package of measures announced by Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Interior Minister Faeser. The government also seeks to expand opportunities for asylum seekers to work, and the federal states are advocating for additional support in accommodating asylum seekers, a topic that will be addressed in a joint consultation on November 6th.

Germany has witnessed a significant increase in the number of refugees arriving this year, with the BAMF, Germany’s asylum agency, recording over 204,000 asylum applications in the first eight months of 2023 – a 77 percent surge compared to the same period the previous year. Notably, more than a million people from Ukraine have sought refuge in Germany since the onset of the conflict and are not required to apply for asylum. The German federal government is actively implementing various measures to mitigate the influx of asylum seekers, including border controls with Poland, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland.
