Google rolls out ‘subscribe via Google’ in the Netherlands

1 min read

In March 2018, Google announced “subscribe to Google.” The service is focused on news media and is already being used by American media, such as The Washington Post and The New York Times.

The idea behind this service is that readers no longer have to create a special account for different news platforms, but can use their Google account everywhere.

Google has made ‘subscription via Google’ available in Europe. NRC Handelsblad is the first news medium to use the service, Google Netherlands communications manager Rachid Finge announced via Twitter.

When readers of NRC Handelsblad have read more than four articles for free on the website of the newspaper, they will see a screen to conclude a subscription.

To continue reading, readers must create a special account on the NRC Handelsblad site, but with ‘pay via Google’ this can be done with a few clicks.

Readers log in to their Google Account and pay with a credit card or PayPal account that is linked to the Google account.
