Science&Tech You can’t hide from the status updates on Kilimanjaro Posted on August 18, 2022 2 min read Share on Facebook Share on Twitter Share on Google+ Mountaineers can now use high-speed internet on Kilimanjaro. Tanzania has ensured that this is available on the world’s highest free-standing mountain. The Tanzanian Minister of Information calls the installation at an altitude of 3,720 meters “historic”. Kilimanjaro reaches up to 5,895 meters above sea level. The mountain is home to three volcanoes: two extinct and one dormant. “Previously, it was dangerous for tourists and climbers who were in the area without internet,” said minister Nape Nnauye. To a certain extent, everyone can be reached from now on. Nnauye hopes to be able to offer internet access at the top of the mountain by the end of the year as well. Kilimanjaro is a popular tourist attraction and a major source of income for Tanzania. Every year, about 35,000 people try to reach the top of the mountain. The area is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Mountaineers have access to the internet and other modern facilities in more and more places around the world. For example, climbers of Mount Everest come across Wi-Fi access points and mobile charging stations on their way up.
